Prosecution: Senate should assert right to try impeach cases

MANILA -- The prosecution team urged the Senate to assert its constitutional right to try and decide on impeachment cases and defy the Supreme Court’s (SC) order stopping the disclosure of Chief Justice Renato Corona’s bank accounts.

“For us, the Senate should assert that the impeachment tribunal is a class of its own,” House Deputy Speaker Lorenzo “Erin” Tañada III, one of the spokespersons for the prosecution panel, said.

Tañada said he recognizes that senator-judges will not be making an easy decision as this will set a precedent in future impeachment proceedings.

1 killed in Camarines flood

ONE person died in Camarines Sur due to flood brought about by a low pressure area (LPA), the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said.

The disaster council identified the fatality as Lilia Alarcio, 18, of Barangay Munti Calbario, Buhi town.

It said Alarcio was swept away while she was crossing Buhi River.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said at 2 a.m. Monday, the LPA was estimated based on satellite and surface data at 70 kilometers east of Dipolog City. (Sunnex)

MANILA -- Lawyers of Chief Justice Renato Corona have filed a motion asking the impeachment court to defer examination of his dollar account with Philippine Savings Bank (PSBank) while waiting for a Supreme Court injunction against it to be served.

"Although the temporary restraining order (TRO) has not yet been served upon the Honorable Impeachment Court, it is respectfully prayed that examination of the records of the bank statements in question and testimony relating to them be deferred in the meanwhile," the motion signed by lawyer Jose Roy III read.

Negros quake death toll now 43

THE number of fatalities in the 6.9-magnitude earthquake that struck Negros and Cebu islands rose to 43 on Monday.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), in its 6 a.m. Monday report, recorded 43 fatalities all from Negros Oriental.

The fatalities include 17 in Guilhungan, eight in Jimalalud, three in Tayasan, one in Bindoy, two in Manjuyod, two in Ayungon, and 10 in La Libertad.

The NDRRMC also recorded 54 people injured and 66 others still missing.

Earthquake shakes Switzerland

GENEVA -- The Swiss Seismological Service said a moderate earthquake shook Switzerland with the epicenter in the northcentral canton (state) Zug and Lake Zurich area.

The Zurich-based service said Sunday that the magnitude-4.2 quake could be felt around much of Switzerland Saturday night, and some minor damage was possible but unlikely.

There were no immediate reports of any damage.

Switzerland is an area of moderate seismic activity — most do not exceed a magnitude of 3 — and the last earthquake that caused damage was in 1991 in the southeast canton of Graubuenden.

Bombo Radyo said Cebu Pacific Air canceled its 7 a.m. flight from Manila to Naga City and its return trip. Another airline Airphil Express has also canceled its Naga to Manila trip scheduled to depart at 10 a.m. Sunday.

The flight cancellations were triggered by the effects of a low pressure area estimated to be in the vicinity of Hinatuan City in Mindanao.

Ex-lawmaker's boyfriend shot dead

MANILA -- Representative Nanette Castelo-Daza's long-time boyfriend was shot dead in Quezon City Friday.

The victim Noel Orate was shot five times inside Daza's house in Barangay Teachers Village East in Quezon City. Orate, Daza's boyfriend of 12 years, died on the spot.

The suspect was identified as Daza's son-in-law Allan Robes, a board member of Bulacan province.

The suspect was arrested and is detained at the Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit.

Literary agent Gary Morris says Zaslow was killed Friday. Zaslow was co-author of the inspirational "The Last Lecture" and recently released "The Magic Room." He was also a columnist for The Wall Street Journal.

The Antrim County sheriff's office says the accident occurred about 9:15 a.m. local time in Warner Township. Zaslow's car slid into the path of a semitrailer. He was killed on impact.

In a text message, Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr. said “he’s (Fariňas) just feeling frustrated. I would not support it myself”.

Prosecutor threatens to impeach 8 High Court justices

MANILA -- Prosecutor Rodolfo Fariňas threatened to impeach the eight Supreme Court (SC) justices who voted in favor of the issuance of a temporary restraining order (TRO) on PSBank records Thursday.

“The 188 signatories to the impeachment complaint against Corona should be consistent and impeach the other eight justices,” Fariňas said after the SC, with a vote of 8-5-2, issued a TRO in favor of PSBank’s petition.

‘Corona failed to declare P28.5M in 2010 SALN’

MANILA -- The prosecution panel believes Chief Justice Renato Corona failed to declare around P28.5 million as “cash and investments” in his 2010 statement of assets, liabilities, and net worth (SALN).

This developed after Leonora Dizon, branch manager of the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) Ayala, disclosed that Corona’s account had an ending balance of P12 million in December 2010.

If to be computed along with the balance of his two PSBank accounts, the amount would reach close to P32 million. Corona only declared P3.5 million cash in his 2010 SALN.

More than 5000 troop to support embattled Chief Justice

MANILA—Supporters who allegedly belonged to the religious bloc Iglesia ni Cristo went to the Supreme Court to denounce the ongoing impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona.

Some 5,000 people filled both lanes of Padre Faura in Manila, where the High Court is located, said Superintendent Ricardo Layug, chief of the Manila Police District Station 5 as red-shirted court employees also gathered in the SC grounds to show sympathy with Corona supporters.
